Bill McGeeney here from Round Guys Brewing Company! Let me tell you about a beer named Nautical Disaster!

What on Earth is a Barleywine?

Truth be told, this is one of my favorite styles of beers, and quite frankly, we nail this one!

Barleywines, aptly named such for their intense abv, come largely in two species: American or English. As you may have guessed, both beers are of similar builds with the American being sharper and more exaggerated in flavors than the nimble and humble English style.

Regardless of which subcategory they fall into, the important thing to note is the deep complexity of the caramel malt character. The big malt backbone can often layer deep toffee, raison, fig, and more against rich berry and piney hop flavors.

Why you should care?

At 10.4% ABV this probably isn’t your daily drinker. And while chiming in at 58 IBUs, this beer surprisingly presses against the upper limit of bitterness for this category.

I say surprisingly because the hop bitterness isn’t as defined or as noticeable thanks to a thick layer of delicious malt derived flavors.  This is a full bodied ale, and one best suited for a enjoyable cold night by the fire.
